Hypnobirthing with Heather

If you are reading this section it is because you want to know more about me, Heather! And I am so glad, because that means that you value who will be delivering your course. As a teacher with 10 years experience, I understand how important it is that you have the right relationship with your instructor. We all remember the teacher from school that we didn't get along with - and equally we remember that teacher who we really connected with, who understood us and supported us achieve our best - so when booking a hypnobirthing course, choosing your instructor is just as important as choosing your course.

So what makes me so great? Or different from other Hypnobirthing instructors?

Firstly, personality wise, I'm one of those 'what you see is what you get' sort of people. I'm also a bit of a geek - a Hermione Granger type person -  and I strive to give 100% to every couple who books a course with me. I love to keep up to date on the latest research and guidelines surrounding birth and pregnancy care so that I am best able to support those I work with. I am also mildly (highly) competitive, in all aspects of life! It is my goal to make the Stirling Birth School the best it can be for antenatal education and hypnobirthing, and I will work my socks off to ensure that all courses delivered are of the highest quality.

Secondly,  I have a degree in Psychology. When preparing for birth, it is as much about your mindset as it is about understanding the physiology of labour. With a background in Psychology I am qualified to help you understand how to reframe your mindset so that you can look forward to your birth with excitement and confidence rather than fear. In the same way that athletes training for a major event will enlist the help of a sports psychologist to help get them in the right head space for their competition, think of me as a birth psychologist, who will help prepare you mentally for whats ahead.

In addition to my Psychology degree, I also have a degree in Education. So aside from being qualified in Hypnobirthing, I am also qualified in teaching. Whilst you could hire someone to stand and read robotically from a powerpoint, or worse just watch videos of antenatal education online, I will ensure that you learn the content in a way that suits your learning style. With over 10 years working in schools, I know how to make learning memorable, fun and engaging, so whether you attend an evening class or full day workshop, it definitely won't be a snoozefest! I love games and making the content interactive - Birth Environment Bingo anyone? Or what about Hormone Cocktail (Mocktail) Making? And at the end of each session we will work on relaxation techniques - so if you do feel the need to have a nap then I won't be offended - pregnancy is exhausting after all!

Finally, I am passionate about birth! I have given birth twice - to two fantastic boys. There probably are not many people who can say that their first baby's due date was the date that the UK went into the first national lockdown! 23.03.20 - you don't forget that date if you have been looking forward to it for ten months only for it to be a date of national catastrophe! Had I done a birth preparation course? I don't think I'd even heard of one! I wasn't prepared to give birth, let alone to give birth during a global pandemic! Like many, I assumed I could just 'go with the flow', and needless to say, without proper understanding or a plan, the 'flow' wasn't quite what I expected! This led me on a personal journey of antenatal education. When I was blessed with the chance to give birth again, I wanted to be more informed, more able to make choices about my birth and better prepared to adapt to changes if they cropped up. The birth of my second baby was such an empowering, exhilarating, intense, wonderful (there isn't a word to describe it) experience that I want all birthing people to have the opportunity to have this for themselves.

I am passionate about supporting women and their families through pregnancy and birth, and hope to change the narrative that birth is something to fear. My aim is to support as many people as possible to have the birth they deserve, through education, guidance and empowerment. My goal is to help you feel informed, calm and confident for the birth of your baby, however and wherever that may be.
